| Lake Smith & Lake Lawson |
|
 |
Lake Smith and Lake Lawson are reservoirs owned and managed by the City of Norfolk. They are connected, even though most maps show them as separate. The input to both lakes is rain water - not just what falls into the lakes, but all that falls on our houses, yards and streets. The only outflow from Lakes Lawson and Smith is through the wier under Northampton Boulevard into Little Creek Reservoir.
There are regulations and permit requirements imposed by the City of Norfolk - but they are probably NOT what you have heard. For example:
Paddle boats are allowed. Lake level is no longer adjusted to a winter and summer level. The boat engine limit is no longer 9.9 horsepower. Pontoon boats are no longer prohibited. Trees growing in the lake, or within 10 feet of the lake, cannot be cut down without permission from the City of Norfolk.
Please keep in mind that everything that falls in your yard or in your street runs into the storm drains and directly into our lakes.
For the detailed answers to these and many other questions - and for good contour maps of the lakes, visit the City of Norfolk web site at www.norfolk.gov/utilities/resources. For a direct hyperlink, look in the Favorite Links section under Assorted Links.
