Waste Management Guidelines

These guidelines apply ONLY to the single family homes. If you live in The Commons, Centre Green, Traditions, or the apartments, please refer to your condo CC&R'S and/or your management.

TRASH AND GARBAGE
The 90-gallon black containers should be at the curb by 7am on Wednesdays (but not prior to Tuesday night) with the handle facing your house. Keep at least three feet of clearance betwen the container and mailbox, bags, cars, etc., so trucks can pick them up without difficulty. Containers should be removed from the street by Wednesday night. Label your container with your street address and record your serial number. If you miss your pick up, you can haul your own garbage in a private vehicle with a Virginia Beach sticker to one of the SPSA Transfer Stations at 2025 Virginia Beach Boulevard (491-2265) or 1925 Transfer Road (Landstown area, 468-3382) or Landfill II at 1989 Jake Sears Road (366-4560). Call for times and exact locations.

BULKY ITEMS
Call 430-2450 at least 24 hours before collection day to place a work order for collection of items too large for your container. Mention if you have Freon-containing appliances or cans of paint because they require special handling. Waste Management does NOT pick up building marerials, rocks, dirt, cement, vehicle parts, glass, or hazardous materials.

YARD WASTE
You may put out up to 25 CLEAR plastic bags of yard debris, such as grass and leaves (no dirt), weighing no more than 25 pounds per bag. Limbs of up to four feet long and six inches in diameter will be picked up if placed in a pile not to exceed 4' x 4' x 4'. A maximum of one pile will be collected each week.

WASTE FROM TREE REMOVALS
It will not be picked up, so you must arrange for this separately. If you contract to have trees taken down, removal arrangements should be included in the contract. If you elect to do it yourself, Virginia Beach has Yard Waste Trailers available on a first come, first served basis for larger amounts of debris. You need to call 430-2450 well in advance to schedule one of these 13' x 7' x 5' containers for a 24-hour weekday period or for a weekend. An adult must be home to sign for the container when it is delivered. Tree limbs no larger than six inches in diameter must fit totally within the container. Loose grass, leaves, and debris (in CLEAR plastic bags) are also acceptable. You may also take debris (same restrictions apply) to the SPSA Yard Waste facility at 1991 Jake Sears Road (at the Landfill). Call 424-4631 for directions and times.

RECYCLING
Blue recycling containers are picked up every other Wednesday. Placement is the same as waste containers, allowing three feet of clearance between the container and mailboxes, bags, cars, etc. Please pour or wipe out contents of cans or bottles before recyling.

Acceptable items include clean, dry, cup up or flattened corrugted cardboard boxes; telephone books; paper grocery bags; cardboard cereal and cracker boxes; unwanted mail; magazines; clean newspapers and inserts (remove and discard the plastic bags); computer paper; clear, green, and brown glass bottles and jars (remove and discard lids); household plastic bottles and jars with necks or spouts (remove and discard lids); aluminum, steel, and tin cans; and aluminum foil and pie tins.

UNacceptable items include all plastic bags, bags of garbage, yard debris, styrofoam (peanuts or blocks), motor oil bottles; waxed milk or juice cartons, and plastic other than bottles and jars.

If your container is missed during pick up, call 430-2450 before noon on Thursday. For additional information call the Beach Line (427-3580, ext. 349) or visit www.city.virginia-beach.va.us.

For all other questions or problems regarding waste pick up, call Waste Management at 430-2450.

HOW IDENTITY THEFT OCCURS
Skilled identity thieves use a variety of methods to gain access to your personal information. For example:
* They get information from businesses or other institutions by stealing records from their employer, bribing an employee who has access to these records and backing into the organization's computers.

* They rummage through your trash, the trash of businesses, or dumps in a practice known as 'dumpster diving.'

* They obtain credit reports by abusing their employer's authorized access to their credit reports or by posing as a landlord, employer, or someone else who may have a legal right to the information.

* They steal credit and debit card numbers as your card is processed using a special information storage device known as skimming.

* They steal wallets and purses containing identification and credit and bank cards.

* They steal mail, including bank and credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, new checks, or tax information.

* They complete a 'change of address form' to divert mail to another location.

* They steal personal information from your home.

* They scam personal information from you by posing as a legitimate business person or government official.
